Brief History

The Mindanao State University - Marawi Astronomy Club was borne out of the desire of certain individuals--residents, stu dents, faculty and staff of MSU Marawi Campus, to have an organization centered around the field of interest known as amateur astronomy and astronomical observation. The initial (core) group was founded by Rodion M. Herrera, Maria Ninotchka M. Herrera, Walter Mainit, Jowen Kibtiani, Jenny Kibtiani and April Rose Torion.

The group first met on December 1, 2011, at the Herrera Residence at 009 3rd Street MSU Campus, to discuss the possibility of forming an astronomy group based in MSU Main Campus in Marawi City, modelled after the MSU-IIT Astronomy Society, which is based in Iligan City. After the initial meeting, the group, which has access to a telescope (Jowen's), conducted a brief observation session, and observed the planet Jupiter. As the first meeting drew to a close, the group's core members expressed commitment to formally begin accepting new members who are interested in astronomy.

More meetings were held afterwards, and slowly, the group's size grew to around 20 members by mid December. As of this date, the membership continues to grow, as the young organization prepares itself to introduce the wonders of the natural world and the universe to the incoming members.
